Given what the internet has to say about germination rates my expectations are extremely low (never mind the whole "they don't breed true" thing) -- but hey, we have a science project, and I have learned that the trees can be hardy down to -10°C!

Date: 2023-12-02 06:20 am (UTC)The practice of grafting onto rootstocks is also... okay, I understand the reasons why people do it, but I dislike the propensity of most commonly-used Prunus rootstocks to send up suckers, and there are other ways to limit the growth of trees to a manageable size; I am not sure the current practice actually results in a lower-maintenance tree, especially since the climate is less predictable these days. And most home gardeners aren't going to select the right rootstock for their soil and conditions, they're going to pick up whatever mass-produced tree is available from Tesco or B&Q, and then think it's their fault when it doesn't grow well. Even the fruit tree specialists I see mostly only sell rootstocks based on the size of tree you want.
So on balance I think having the better genetic diversity from growing fruit from seed is a good thing, and more people should do it. You'll still get some kind of tree from almost every successful germination, and that's not nothing, and it might actually have a better chance of thriving than a commercially available cultivar grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock; and if the fruit is truly terrible you can always cut it down and plant something else there.
Hello yes I have opinions about fruit trees.
