(1) "Awwwwwwwww, ice-core records from Mount Everest go back a whole 350 years! Innit cute?!" (The furthest we've gone with cores from Antarctica is 800,000 years, and people're working on getting that back to at least 1.5 million.)
(2) "We haven't had any really big volcanoes go up in a very long time. It's awfully frustrating. Monitoring technology's moved on so much in the past twenty years!" (Context: Mount Pinatubo; my regrettable tendency to view the world as my lab and forget about human costs.)
(As I believed I've mentioned before, one of the really obvious ways you can tell I'm a geologist is that I've started thinking of anything under 800degC as "cold". Also the bit where anything that's happened in the last five million years counts as recent. I've got it baaaad.)
