COME AND SEE THE ABLEISM INHERENT IN THE SYSTEM

Dear Ms [surname]
I have recently received a DLA form from the Department for Work and Pensions but I have not yet completed it as from my current understanding you seem ineligible to claim this benefit
Please refer to the link below for eligibility.
This benefit usually applies to people who need help with washing/dressing or meal making or who are unable to walk unaided.
Please make an appointment to discuss this in more detail if you feel I have not properly understood things from your perspective.

Yours sincerely
Dr M Daniels
Imperial College Health Centre

incidentally, my practice has my title as "Mx" :D :D :D :D

*tilts head* is he wrong about you, about the eligibility criteria, or about what he's supposed to do with the form, or all of the above?

DEAR DR M DANIELS, THEY USE A FUCKING WHEELCHAIR.

And wasn't it you who was expressing interest in a thing like HabitRPG except the daily task 'shower' could expand into the subtasks 'make sure shower curtain is inside tub', 'turn on hot water', 'make sure water is hot but not scalding', etc? (Shame [community profile] zero2perl doesn't seem to be taking off, because I have vague notions of trying to code that thing. Along with the proper version of the random character generator I thought of the other year, and possibly a couple other things.)

eta: wow it's been a while since [community profile] zero2perl was posted in last. *pokes them gently*

I'm so sorry dude. And also, this is why a system which sets it up so people with long term/severe conditions are SOLELY/MOSTLY treated by Primary care and GPs is STUPID. Because quite often your official GP has either 1) never met you or 2) met you six months ago when you had a cold, and during which the main focus was your cold.

(And just... fucking doctors/other professionals who go out of their way to "go beyond the call of duty" in a way which is that unhelpful. Also every mental health professional over the years (there are blessedly fewer of them in my life now) who has told me that I shouldn't identify as disabled, it's letting my condition define me.)

YES. Because if you don't present the right way the can do stuff which FUCKS UP YOUR LIFE. (Like sending that letter and not filling in important forms, or strongly advising you to drop out of everything/leave your job if you seem TOO ill or disabled, or shame you for twenty minutes having the gall to be unemployed and disabled and come in for a prescription for paracetemol/migraine meds/hayfever meds).

(And why do they both tell me that cold turkeying by accident off meds is evil and proof I'm not responsible/a grown up/don't WANT to get better and then have a system which makes accidental cold turkey REALLY LIKELY if you have problems with working memory and leaving the house)

Or like that One Neurologist I shan't be going back to for Reasonz, one of which is that the first thing in is getting weighed and then having the nurse show you a BMI chart and point where your BMI is and shame you about it ("people in the green zone tend to have fewer health conditions such as X, Y, and Z"). Which is rolled up in the great big ball of feels I have about all the neurologists I've ever seen being in a range of vaguely problematic to very problematic, except for one who is impossible to get an appointment with and is probably going to retire soon, so I just don't want to ever see one again even though at some point I'm probably going to need to at least for migraines because mine can be tricksy beasts.

/o\

IDK why all disability assistance systems ever seem to be predicated on the notion that YOU MUST BE SUFFERING SO TERRIBLY and YOU MUST SUFFER MORE TO PROVE HOW TERRIBLY YOU ARE SUFFERING and also DO SO EVERY X # OF YEARS and if we see you smile, we will cut your benefits or something! It feels so not about actually helping people with disabilities feel better, and more about making people without disabilities feel like they're helping people not die on the streets but also not helping the "undeserving" (whatever the fuck that means) and thus feel satisfied with themselves. And also useful target of ire in election year ("those lazy people who don't deserve disability pensions").

Yep. (And that one neurologist sounds AWFUL and while I understand that you need weight to calculate doses sometimes, why do they ALWAYS WEIGH US and then work out BMI and tell us, it seems very silly)

Or the GP who rang my baby sister at home the day after her 18th birthday to tell her that she should know that she was on very strong medications for epilepsy, and that she should not and could not get pregnant, it would be irresponsible and dangerous (at nine in the morning on a Monday, when baby sister had been having a lie in before her exam that afternoon so that she would have had enough sleep to function)

It's like they think it will be a surprise or something and we will immediately go home and eat only lettuce for a month or some crap. IDEK.

What. Even. That's terrible. (And also, I sympathize, having been on a lot of anti-epileptics for Bipolar Disorder. Fortunately I have negative desire to get pregnant and my partner isn't going to without divine intervention, but jeezus. Also thank goodness for the one pharmacist who was responsible enough to tell me that Topamax can make birth control spontaneously stop working when *none of my doctors did*. Like, kind of important information, even if I'm not currently with a partner who might necessitate birth control, no? And I have friends who are married, on Topamax, and had never been informed. What even people. KIND OF IMPORTANT. OK sorry, that got really off topic. I just. Doctors, I have a Thing.)

Yeah. I mean, my baby sister's response was "well, yes, I know, it's not really an issue at the moment, also I FUCKING TALK TO MY NEUROLOGIST THANKYOUVERYMUCH" (it was that a GP, who was not even my sister's named GP, took it upon herself to ring my sister at home and tell her).

And a doctor finally bothered to ask me, when checking about reproductive health stuff recently, if she actually needed to ask about this because if I didn't have intercourse then she could probably skip the questions and give me less frequent check ups.

Haha- I think you may be right about the constant BMIs. Like, both myself and my dad do KNOW our shirt size, and that we are fat, and also that there is a range of reasons for that including meds we've been on. But we've both had a number of doctors tell us about our BMIs in a tone which suggested that we probably were just too thick to notice the size of the our bodies.

Oh, FWIW, the NHS or whatever power-that-be made my 95-year-old grandmother attempt to walk however many metres unaided to see if she qualified for her disabled parking pass. SHE IS 95 AND USES A CANE OR WALKER; I THINK SHE QUALIFIES.
