I don't appear to have actually mentioned here that one of the reasons I've not been around much this autumn/winter is that as of about October I have been dealing with fatigue of the "sleep 16 hours a day" variety, which was diagnosed by local-GP as anaemia; I was given iron supplements and sent on my way, no further investigation required or so they said.

The iron helped quite a lot for a fortnight but I've just had another span of days where I just... need to sleep a lot. There's various other Health Misc going on that might be inflammatory/autoimmune-cluster nonsense or might just be coincidence, but given my family history of pernicious anaemia I... am going to get a second opinion from a different GP in a fortnight or so's time?

Like. Fundamentally that won't help much with the bit where most of why I've been writing more here over the past fortnight is I've been aggressively ignoring PhD writing, but it might help with some of the limited-energy-for-anything.

Fatigue is a serious rival to chronic pain as the Rankest Possible Physical Bullshit. I'm sorry D: Wishing you luck in finding a straightforward, treatable cause.

May I suggest checking thyroid hormones; NHS reference ranges for TSH are completely useless, though...

Oh ugh, I'm sorry.

If it helps convince them to do the bloodwork, you could lean on the vegetarianism? The only person I know personally who's had B12 anaemia is a lifelong meat-eater (who like you has a family history) and in your case there's ABUNDANT reason to suspect non-dietary causes, but food prejudices being what they are, it might do the trick.

(Also, apologies if you've already thought of it, but how's your VitD?)

Oof. Yes, this is worth checking out further.

I sometimes slip into "all sleepy, all the time" with seasonal affective stuff. It is rubbish, and slows my thinking down enough that it can take a while before I identify the problem, because I don't feel depressed or low, just tired.

My mother has developed pernicious anemia and has to go in for iron transfusions every three months or so. She's always had some minor anemia issues - she couldn't take the usual prenatal vitamins when she was pregnant with me as they made her sick up a lot from the iron.
Here's hoping you can get your iron in a much less fraught way than visiting the Oncology Ward and an eight hour infusion!

Fingers crossed for nothing major, you've got quite enough to deal with already!

God, I've just realised I can still remember the taste and feel of the iron tablets from that childhood bout of aneamia I was telling you about!

And remember, aggressively ignoring work-related writing over the holidays is something 99.9% of the population is currently doing!
