(or, Three Entities On The Bummel)
(Spoilers for all of Season 5 so far. This is a more detailed write-up of my realisation the other night, for cross-posting to tumblr and maybe even the AO3.)
The world as we knew it has ended, through the offices of an Archivist who is also an Archive: who has been marked by each of the Powers, who moves through the world as a living chronicle of terror. Jon needed, though, to be both Archive and Archivist: without the driving physical need to read statements, he couldn't have been used as conduit.
I spent the first arc of Season 5 trying to work out what was going on, as we moved through The Slaughter and The Corruption and The Stranger and The Buried and The End and The Desolation and The Lonely and The Flesh and The Web and The Dark and The Vast and The Extinction and, finally, The Hunt. Which makes thirteen.
It is, in some senses, a return Season 1: to a tour of the world as we didn't know it, an anthology of slow revelations. It's a thematic echo, a turning back, a new beginning.
AND ALSO (I didn't quite sit bolt upright in bed at gone midnight but I did think OH SHIT D: very loudly): each of the entities is leaving their mark on Martin.
The Eye's already covered, of course. The Spiral? ... well, Martin's already crossed Helen's threshold (well, Michael's) and he does try to fall into her again, and we've already had it dangled in front of us that Jon can no longer use the Spiral as a convenient short-cut without destroying it.
Which makes... fifteen.
Martin is an Archive, too.
(
vassraptor: -- THE MAGNUS ARCHIVES--!!!)
OKAY
BUT
IT GETS WORSE!!!
Jon, see, Jon knows he's invulnerable. Jon knows that he's (thank you, Helen) The Watcher, not the watched. Martin, though? Martin's still afraid. Martin's not been claimed. Martin... can still be marked.
Which means that unlike Jon, Martin has been marked by The Extinction, which, crucially, means Martin is the only one of the two of them who has now been marked by all the Powers.
which means. which MEANS. that Martin is going to have to be the one who does the ritual-in-reverse. because Jon can't.
obviously, of course, I'm speculating wildly, but honestly, having washed up here from Mechs fandom? I don't know what all the implications of this particular Horrifying Realisation are but I'm absolutely certain they're not good
YOU'RE WELCOME.

I have so many questions
Date: 2020-09-02 07:32 am (UTC)Also, if Martin fully accepts a role as the Extinction's Avatar as the price of destroying all the fears, does he develop an appetite for killing Avatars?
