Right. So. This migraine.

It started on Wednesday. Frovatriptan #1 did... very little. Frovatriptan #2 and, later still on Thursday, #3, also did... not much. Today I did not take triptans, and paracetamol continued to do precisely nothing, so I was mostly wretched and photosensitive and miserable and not much use for anything...

... and then once he'd done with work and at the yelling behest of some friends, I hunted up the NICE guidance and A called 111 for me.

(Shenanigans ensued, with 111 repeatedly insisting on calling not the number they had been given on this occasion but instead the number they had on record for me, which went to a phone that was! on silent! because I was on day 3 of a migraine! but we sorted it out eventually.)

Because I wasn't in "intolerable" (by my standards) pain, and because I wasn't at risk of dehydration, I was politely requested not to present myself at hospital. However, the GP said (as reported by A), Unusual Circumstances Call For Unusual Measures, so while sure I shouldn't be treating codeine as first-line medication, I could go ahead and take it at a Sensible Dosage As Agreed With My Usual Care Providers.

Oh, and if you can, best practice would also be to have some caffeine, I Was Informed.

As you may or may not recall, I am usually pretty stringent about avoiding caffeine, because it turns out I am the kind of hypersensitive that very reliably results in panic attacks that last for hours.

However. One (30mg) codeine tablet and one mug of very weak (¼ tsp loose leaf) Earl Grey (with lemon) later, I requested the main lights be switched on, and also took my sunglasses off for purposes other than "immediately putting on an eye mask" or "making myself miserable to prove I still have a migraine", and started being engaged and enthusiastic and cheerful again.

In conclusion, frovatriptan appears to do me fuck-all good, though I'll finish out the pack next migraine just to be sure; zolmitriptan is... weirdly actually better, probably, having reviewed all of my data from the last six and a half months in slightly more detail; I am going to take the codeine rather sooner next time; and I nearly cried over getting to drink an entire actual cup of proper tea and feeling better for it, so that is getting added to my arsenal as well.

In summary: hopefully I now get another fortnight and change before the next round of this shit, so with a little bit of luck and a following wind I might even find it in me to talk about something that isn't Embodiment: The Terriblest Hobby. At least for a bit.

I'm glad you're feeling better. Migraines are some of the most horrible pain you can be in and I'm sorry you're dealing with them.

I’m so glad you’re feeling better! I don’t get migraines but one of my best friends does and a really bad migraine of hers was the one time I’ve been to an urgent care (that I actually was old enough to remember) because she’d been lying in a dark room in the campus health center most of the day and nothing was working so at like 5pm they were like “you should probably go to urgent care” (and then we were there for like 6 hours)

Oof well I'm glad the tea worked.

I was thinking yesterday that your bullet journal spread is something I might like to adapt, so thank you for sharing it! I have a little routine I've been deploying at early signs of maybe-migraine [1], and it mostly seems to work, but I'm only actually good at noting down when it fails and I could use the reassurance I'm not eating ibuprofen unnecessarily.

[1] eat something that will raise my blood sugar, drink some caffeine (pref. fizzy), take some ibuprofen, SIT STILL for at least 20 minutes or so, preferably somewhere dim

Woof. The data is useful, but we definitely wish it wasn't the kind of data where you have to suffer through a migraine to get.

I really, really hope that once your viva is over, the migraines ease off. (My pre-submission house-move new-job bodily fail was flashing lights in my vision, which was… scary.)

I have found that a small mug of tea or coffee helps the meds work faster and while I'm pretty there's a medical reason, my NP and I aren't going to go poking as long as it works.

(catching up on reading list)

so i missed the end of that migraine somehow and i gotta say, i am super fucking glad the caffeine helped. because i GUARANTEE YOU the caffeine did at least half as much good as the codeine. i find that combination is pretty good for mine too. <3
